Plan Called for Covert Aid in Iraq Vote

In the months before the Iraqi elections in January, President Bush approved a plan to provide covert support to certain Iraqi candidates and political parties, but rescinded the proposal because of Congressional opposition, current and former government officials said Saturday.

The article, however, cites unidentified former military and intelligence officials who said the administration went ahead with covert election activities in Iraq that "were conducted by retired C.I.A. officers and other non-government personnel, and used funds that were not necessarily appropriated by Congress. Dearest Craig, in this case I think you are being naive. Of course, it is to be expected that the Bush administration has at least tried to manipulate the Iraqi elections. They had a big stake in the outcome of these elections, as they certainly didn't want a second Iran, which, however, may still be the result if you look at what is happening in Iraq at the moment. So, as usual, also to be expected, they did the wrong thing and made the wrong choices. The problem for Bush (or of course the good thing for others) is that everything will come to light of day nowadays, so that they will ever less get away with things. That's fine, but I don't expect the press 'to grind the Bush administration into the ground'. They might lose their press cards for the White House press conferences. Just wait and see what is going to happen, and stay calm and objective in the meantime. That is also better for your health. Wim.

I think I knew they would try and manipulate the elections, but I was surprised it was leaked (i.e. went public). Now is the time to pounce. The press has been very meak, but the Karl Rove situation has unleased some fury from the press, so maybe they will continue on this subject as well.

I will try and stay calm. :-)
